Message To Southwest Virginians

From Virginia GOP chairman Pat Mullins:

"We can't say we weren't warned. Candidates Obama and Biden made it plain in 2008 that they were no fans of the coal industry. Obama told us in no uncertain terms that he wanted America to move away from coal, and that his plan was to make coal unaffordable as a choice for utility companies. Biden said he didn't want to see any new coal plants built in the United States.

Four years later, the Environmental Protection Agency has followed through on those words, and now Southwest Virginia will pay the price - 3 mines closed here, five more in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Some 1,200 jobs gone. Meanwhile, Tim Kaine defends the regulations that are sending Virginia miners to the unemployment line.

Meanwhile, President Obama continues to sit on his hands as another 207,000 Virginia jobs are on the chopping block in the sequester. Whether it's mines in Southwest Virginia, contractors in Northern Virginia, or shipyard workers in Hampton Roads, there's no part of this Commonwealth where jobs are safe from President Obama's failed leadership and destructive policies.

We need a President who will help us balance the budget responsibly, without gutting our national defense. We need a President who understands that coal is an energy and economic resource, not an environmental danger to be stamped out. We need a U.S. Senator who will fight for the coal industry, not try to regulate it to death.

We need a team that will lead. And that's why Virginians are going to vote for Mitt Romney and George Allen in November.

The damage is being done. Let's put a stop to it.
